Recognitions and Awards
27. Recognize Kenneth McAllister and David Silverman as recipients of the Governor's Shine Award - Superintendent Van Zant

Minutes: Superintendent Van Zant recognized Kenneth McAllister (absent) and David Silverman, former servicemen and current Clay County educators.  These gentlemen received a medallion from Governor Rick Scott in recognition of their service to their country and to public education.  They were two of only five recognized state wide.
28. Recognize Jim Harbin Media Festival State winners - Karen Robinson

Minutes: 

Karen Robinson, Instructional Media Services Specialist, reported on the Jim Harbin Media Festival and introduced the state winners.  A short video clip highlighted the first place winning videos.

Minutes: Due to an emergency, President Pickens was not able to attend the meeting.

30. Edward "Smitty" Huffman regarding School Board policies

Minutes: 

Mr. Huffman spoke about Safe Crisis Management training and employee personnel files. 

31. Rev. Harry Parrott regarding "Indoctrination" DVD

Minutes: 

Rev. Parrott spoke on behalf of the Americans United for the Separation of Church and State.  He gave a brief synopsis of the video.

32. D-1 Superintendent's Update

Minutes: 

Superintendent Van Zant took the opportunity to brag on all employees of the school system. 

  • Approximately 35,000 students returned to school from Christmas break
  • Approximately 17,000 students ride Clay County school buses everyday
  • Approximately 20,000 student are fed in Clay County cafeterias everyday

He reported briefly on a meeting with Clay Legislative Delegation members to discuss Florida's new Accountability System.

Minutes: 

Dr. George Copeland, Assistant Superintendent for Business Affairs, reviewed the FEFP Third Calculation for 2013-2014 which showed an increase in revenue due to increased student enrollment.  He also discussed a report from Fitch Ratings.  The district's bond rating did not change.

Minutes: 

David Seamons - regarding Florida's Fallen Heroes memorials

Fred Gottshalk - Mr. Gottshalk wanted to speak about the 'Indoctrination" DVD, but was not allowed to speak.  Mr. Gottshalk was informed that this was against School Board Policy to allow a 3-minute response to a 10-minute Scheduled Citizen Request.

39. Comments

Minutes: 

Mrs. Bullock and Mrs. Kerekes both commented on recent opportunities to read at schools during Literacy Week. 

Mrs. Studdard reported on a recent visit to Clearwater High School to tour their Academies and suggested a workshop of the same information for all Board Members.  The Special Meeting/ Workshop was set for Monday, February 10, 2014, at 5:00 p.m. for a review of Wall-to-Wall Academies and to approve the job descriptions postponed earlier in this meeting.  She confirmed Master Board training on January 29, 2014, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. in the District Office Accounts Payable Conference Room.
